2 Samuel 2:6 says, “May the LORD now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this.”
It seems as if kindness is all the rage these days, and yet it feels as though kindness is hard to come by. Divisiveness, unforgiveness, refusal to listen, and cancel culture has taken over our lives. Kindness seems to only live as a slogan on coffee mugs or t-shirts. Grace and mercy have been tossed out the window.
I love that King David offered a blessing of the Lord’s kindness and faithfulness to the men who had buried Saul. Despite the bitter jealousy and rage that King Saul hurled at David, David still honored Saul when he died. Instead of rejoicing over his murder, David chose to bless the men who had buried the remains of Saul.
I wonder if that would happen today? In a culture that is quick to cancel, would the outcome of this story have changed had it occurred in the 21st century?
I know that sometimes it can be hard for me to muster up the humility to show kindness and mercy to someone who has wronged me. As I meditate on this scripture, I feel the call to work on practicing more kindness and goodness to those who may not show the same to me. Instead of throwing out kindness hashtags, I need to actually throw out more kindness.
What are your thoughts on this verse? I would love to hear them!
